Biography

Having been exposed to classical music at home as a kid, it was only natural for me to dwell in music in high school too. Toon Hagen taught me how to approach Bach’s keyboard works, as well as explaining about music theory and composition. Sara Klein Horsman helped me discover how to use my voice, and I learnt more about it with Felix Schoonenboom and Harry van Berne before starting my bachelor’s degree at the conservatory in Utrecht with Jón Thorsteinsson. Having developed a taste for baroque music, I took lessons in singing, harpsichord and declamation with Iakovos Pappas and Hubert Weller in Paris before transferring to the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where I went on to finish my studies with Rita Dams and Noa Frenkel, all the while taking lessons with Michael Chance, Peter Kooij and Pascal Bertin.

Combining my passion for language and lessons in declamation, my main interest today lies in the performance and accompaniment of French baroque music. I love working on and performing any music by composers from all countries, but will always feel most comfortable in German and French spiritual repertoire.

I guess now is the time to tell you how I got started on the harpsichord. Fully to blame is Tineke Steenbrink, who introduced me to it and provided me with a practice instrument the very same day, as well as giving me my first lessons. It was only natural that, when I arrived at the Utrecht Conservatory, I took up harpsichord as my second bachelor’s degree with Siebe Henstra. Thanks to my double degree, I quickly developed a feeling for accompanying singers and instrumentalists, and have been doing so throughout my studies at concerts in- and outside of school, while also still exploring solo repertoire.

This pretty much describes my performance practice as a harpsichord nowadays too: I feel most at ease as an accompanist, working in duo’s or bigger ensembles, but do not shy away from the occasional bit of solo repertoire.
